(1~2천 영단어를 알고 있는 당신은 금방 1만 영단어를 알 수 있다.) 알고 있는 영단어를 활용하여 모르는 단어를 알 수 있다. “가서 어필(appeal) 해봐!” 우리는 어필(appeal)이라는 단어를 자주 쓴다. appeal(기본뜻 : 보여주다)을 알면 appear(나타나다), appearance(겉모습), appealing(마음을 끄는), apparel(복장), apparent(외견상), disappear(사라지다), unappealing(매력 없는), apparently(분명히) 등 추가로 8개의 단어를 자동으로 알게 된다. 2. (영단어 마다 뜻이 많다고 포기하지 말자.) 단어마다 수많은 뜻을 기본뜻 하나로 해결한다. “스트라이크(strike)”는 ‘때리다’라는 기본뜻으로 영문장을 해석하면 된다. 때리다(기본뚯) → (차가) 치다, 손상을 주다, 파업하다, 감동하다, 생각났다, 약속하다, 시계가 울리다, 공격하다, 파업하다 등 수많은 뜻을 알 수 있게 된다. board meeting 이 왜 ‘이사회’일까? 보드(board)”는 기본뜻이 ‘널판지’이다. 『널판지 ⇨ 탈 것 ⇨ 배/비행기/열차 ⇨ (탈 것)에 타다, 널판지 ⇨ 보여주는 것 ⇨ 게시판, 널판지 ⇨ 식탁 ⇨ 식사하다 ⇨ 하숙하다/하숙집, 널판지 ⇨ 회의탁자 ⇨ 회의 ⇨ 위원회 ⇨ 이사회』 이렇게 많은 뜻이 있지만 기본뜻은 하나이다. 3. (form을 알면 18개 영단어는 저절로 알게 된다.) 어원을 통해 가장 효과적으로 영단어를 암기할 수 있다. 예를 들면, ‘폼 form을 재봐.’ 또는 문서 서식이나 형태 등을 ‘폼 form’ 이라고 쓰고 있다. form 의 원뜻은 ‘모양/형태를 만들다’이다. 이 단어를 기반으로 ‘formation, formular, formulate, formulation, format, formal, inform, informative, informer, information, reform, uniform, uniformity, perform, performance, conform, conformation, conformity’등의 단어를 쉽게 암기할 수 있다. 4. As Irish media and society move from an insular, domestic focus in the mid-twentieth century to the global outlook of the twenty-first, this book traces how indigenous media have come to terms with international media players, the role of supranational regulation and the rapid emergence of media forms that know no geographical boundaries. This revised edition extends the period covered backward to the seventeenth century and forward to the twenty-first, and adds online media to the industries covered. It examines the relationship between Irish media and the specific contours of Irish politics, society, culture and the economy, tracing how key events in Irish life – from the civil war to the post-2008 economic crash – were reflected in media coverage, and how those events impacted upon media industries. John Horgan is emeritus professor at the School of Communications, Dublin City University. He was the first press ombudsman in Ireland. Roddy Flynn is a lecturer at the School of Communications, Dublin City University, where he is chair of film and television studies.
